In December
1982, Commercial Motor Freight, the largest less than truckload
(LTL) carrier in Indiana, filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy, leaving its
employees out of work and without benefits. William R. Summitt had
worked for the unionized LTL for nearly 30 years, and had watched
deregulation, rising freight rates, and strong unionization force
shippers to find new ways to secure competitive pricing without
sacrificing next day delivery. Mr. Summitt envisioned a new transportation
sector: truckload freight and brokerage. On March 5, 1983, with
$2,000 capital, a catchy name, and a 1966 White single axle tractor,
Mr. Summitt with two longtime co-workers, started Bestway Trucking,
Inc.
Bestway began
as a carrier that would perform any task the customer needed, from
truckload services, less than truckload, brokerage, to cartage and
warehousing to name a few. By the end of 1985, Bestway generated
over $650,000 revenue from a fleet of six White single axles and
11 trailers.
William R. Summitt
passed away unexpectedly on Christmas day 1985. David L. Summitt
immediately stepped in to fill his father's shoes. A stockholders
meeting was held at which time David L. Summitt was elected President
and Mr. Benningfield Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Thomas chose to resign
as an officer and sell his shares of Bestway to the remaining partners.
The following
years were filled with transitions. Bestway was carving a niche
in the market place, focusing strictly on truckload freight. The
older fleet was replaced with new equipment, the assets of two other
carriers were purchased, office operations were computerized, in-ground
fuel tanks were installed, and an on-site maintenance facility was
built. Throughout the changes and growth, Bestway Trucking prided
itself on top quality service and competitive prices while maintaining
reasonable profits.

Summitt Trucking
is currently operating 460 trucks and 900 trailers including 90
refrigerated units. We also have approximately 150,000 sq. ft. of
warehouse space. Our plans for the future growth continue to be
aggressive. Construction of a new, state-of-the-art terminal is
now close to reality.
We have made it thru all of the Zoning issues, the first round of
the tax abatement process with one more meeting to still attend.
We are anticipating breaking ground in September if all goes well
with an anticipated 12 months to completion. We would like to be
moved prior to the third quarter next year so that we are all in
place prior to busy season.
If you look
at the graphic below you will see an office building right behind
a lake. A large warehouse in the rear of the property. A guard shack
and maintenance building as you come in the main entrance. Scales
will be added somewhere on the property, probably somewhere in front
of the warehouse. A fuel island will be installed in front of the
maintenance area. This will be a state of the art facility. When
completed, all of the Summitt Trucking operations in this area will
be in one location. The full-service terminal in Elizabethtown will
continue to be an important part of our operation.
