Equipment

Summitt Trucking LLC takes pride in the equipment we provide our drivers. It is our goal to provide our drivers with the most technologically advanced and driver friendly trucks on the road. We currently have 50 day cabs, 500 road tractors and over 1000 trailers including various makes and models. The tractor fleet includes Peterbilts, Kenworths, Volvos, Internationals, and Freightliners. The trailer fleet includes both 53 foot dry vans and refrigerated trailers.

All of our tractor units are 2003 models or newer. All are air ride, and most come equipped with stereo / cd players and built in refrigerators. All trucks are scheduled to be equipped with TRIPAK generator kits to meet future air quality control regulations, while providing the driver with the ability to have a temperature controlled environment in the cab and sleeper compartments at a rate of reduced fuel consumption. In addition the TRIPAK will provide three power outlets in the sleeper compartment to run accessory items such as microwaves, video games, TV's and DVD players.

All trucks in the Summitt fleet are equipped with the EATON / VORAD collision avoidance system, a radar based system that provides in cab audio and visual alerts to drivers of potential crash situations allowing the driver to minimize accidents by reacting with defensive driving techniques. Another feature of most Summitt trucks is the Auto Shift transmission, which reduces the number of repetitive motion injuries due to less shifting and clutching and reduces driver fatigue.

  Equipment Maintenance
In order to keep the company's equipment in superior shape, Summitt Trucking has contracted with Idea Paint & Body to perform all preventative maintenance on a routine basis. When switching trucks or receiving a new truck make sure all preventative maintenance has been done, and find out when the next PM is scheduled. The two main PM's are:

Lube service:

Lube service is scheduled after the first 15,000 miles, after that every 25,000 miles.

Full service:

Full service is scheduled every 30,000 miles. The shop will place a written label on the doorframe of every tractor indicating the next mileage when maintenance is due. All drivers should monitor these maintenance mileage numbers and have their driver manager route them to the Jeffersonville Terminal when the tractor mileage is within 1000 miles of the mileage listed on the label.

  Tire Maintenance
Tires must also be kept in good working condition. There are to be no peaks or valleys in the steer tires. The tread must not recede below 4/32" on steer tires, and 2/32" on the rear tires. If a tire is to be replaced when on the road either because of low tread or a blowout, the driver MUST keep the casing for return and have the shop or terminal personnel sign the purchase receipt to show that the casing was returned. If the driver does not return the casing, then they are subject to be charged for the casing, or possibly the entire invoice.

Driver's Maintenance

Drivers should keep the company's equipment clean and orderly. No items can be placed on or near the windshield, door glass, or blind spot door glass that could obstruct the vision or distract the driver. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Stick-on signs
  • Name or CB handle plates
  • Stuffed animals
  • Pictures or photographs
  • Any novelty item(s)
